On May 9, 2017, at a called meeting of the TCS Board of Education, the Board approved the appointment of Ashton Wheeler Clemmons as Assistant Superintendent for the Thomasville City Schools, effective July 1, 2017. The Board of Education is very pleased to welcome Mrs. Clemmons to the Thomasville City School system and looks forward to closely working with her.
Mrs. Clemmons most recently served as school principal of Brooks Global Studies Magnet Elementary School in Greensboro, North Carolina, the highest performing magnet school in the Guilford County Schools system. During her tenure, the school received the National School of Character award. She also served as Principal and Assistant Principal of Oak Hill Elementary school, a successful federal school turn-around, and as a priority schools coach. Mrs. Clemmons taught in Guilford County Schools and Durham Public Schools before beginning her administrative career.
Mrs. Clemmons attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts in Education with Honors. She completed her Master’s in School Leadership at Harvard University where she received The Nathan Glazer Fellowship and Intellectual Contribution Tribute Award. Mrs. Clemmons recently completed her Educational Specialist Degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and will continue with her Doctorate of Educational Leadership program, expected graduation in 2019.
Mrs. Clemmons was recognized by NCASCD awarding her with their Outstanding Young Educator Award, Triad Business Journal’s “Forty Leaders Under Forty” Award, and the United Way Outstanding Human Rights Advocate Award.
