⚙️ Work-based Learning

Connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences

Work-Based Learning (WBL) gives Thomasville City Schools students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real workplace settings, explore career options, and develop the professional skills needed for success after high school.
Through partnerships with local businesses, industries, and community organizations, students gain hands-on experience that connects what they learn in school to their future careers.

What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-Based Learning is a core part of North Carolina’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.
It allows students to participate in structured career experiences that build both technical and employability skills.
Students learn directly from professionals, explore different career pathways, and begin building their resumes before graduation.

Types of Work-Based Learning Opportunities

💼 Internships

Students gain supervised, hands-on experience in a local business or industry setting related to their career interests.
Internships may be paid or unpaid and typically occur during a semester or summer session.

🏢 Apprenticeships / Pre-Apprenticeships

Students combine classroom instruction with on-the-job training.
Apprenticeships often lead to industry certifications or college credit, giving students a head start toward a career and a degree.

🧑‍🏫 Job Shadowing

Short-term experiences that allow students to observe professionals in the workplace, learn about career expectations, and see skills in action.

🏫 School-Based Enterprises

Students manage and operate small businesses within the school — such as a store, café, or design lab — gaining real-world experience in entrepreneurship and operations.

🤝 Career Mentorships

Students are paired with career mentors who provide guidance, insight, and support as they explore career goals and build networks in their chosen fields.
